PORTOLA VALLEY, CA
The first photos are of a project Michael recently finished in Portola Valley. Michael worked with the owner to design a somewhat formal entry gate and fence to an enclosed pool and patio area. This structure makes entering the pool area a very pleasant experience. At the other side of the house is another similar, but less formal gate to the back yard.

TIBURON, CA
Also shown here is a residence in Tiburon, California. Michael Laine assisted in the updating, remodeling, and renovating of this extraordinary home overlooking San Francisco Bay. Combining traditional Japanese design with a modern sensibility, this home, designed and built by Lenny Brackett, owner of East Wind, features a beautiful entryway into a home built on four levels, with remarkable details and workmanship any place you care to look.

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, WA
The third example is the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Memorial, on Bainbridge Island, Washington. This project was sponsored by the Bainbridge Island Internment and Exclusion Memorial Committee, a group dedicated to creating a memorial and visitors center at the ferry terminal site on Bainbridge Island where Japanese Americans were forced to leave their homes for internment camps during World War II. The gates and pavilion, constructed in just 14 days by members of the Timber Framer’s Guild, with Michael Laine serving as one of the project leaders, will serve as the entryway to the planned Visitor Center. This is an example of the Pacific Rim influence on traditional styles from Japan, as interpreted by John Buday, from Cascade Design in the state of Washington.

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
There are a few deatil shots here of a residence in Northern California, built entirely in traditional Japanese style by Joinery Structures. Michael Laine’s participation in this project over a period of seven years included work on all of the traditional Japanese buildings, including the main residence and all of the out buildings. He also headed the team responsible for the exquisite scale model of the main residence.
